This is the second story of a multi-book series. The first book, Bad Cat Jones, chronicles the epic, perilous westward journey taken by a group of former slaves at the end of the Civil War. They left Louisiana seeking a better life in Colorado and had to fight their way through many dangerous encounters along the way. While several travelers died on the journey, the group’s determination and grit carried most of them to their promised land. The caravan arrived in southeast Colorado Territory in April 1866, with mustangs and longhorn cattle captured in South Texas. The adults who survived filed homestead claims to form the basis of the Freedom Town community. The people’s very survival required caring for their cattle and horse herds while planting crops. Stone cabins were built on each homestead, along with a small stone fort for protection. New citizens arrive, bringing new skills, experience, and assets. These newcomers also contribute small herds of sheep, goats, and hogs. The story is action-packed with Freedom Town residents fighting off Indian attacks, rustlers, and other renegades. Ruthless slavers capture seven of Freedom Town’s women and must be chased down. Cat Jones helps rescue a young woman from an opium den. Ferocious animals must be dealt with, including grizzly bears. A truly uplifting story.
